Destination 4 : The Night Before
During the wedding night (tudang penni), there will be a few events that will be done during this time which is khatam Quran (mapanre temme), flower bath (cemme bunga), smearing (mabeddak) and doing the bridegroom's henna (mapacci). This events will be done by both the bride and the groom at their respective home a day before the wedding. The events will start after Isya' prayer.
- Khatam Quran will be managed by an Imam. This ceremony doesn't only be done by the bridegroom but with their families members who's done with their Quran recitation. After this, the neighbour and their close friend will come and they will do mabbarsanji.
- The flower bath ceremony will then be proceed in purpose to ensure that the bridegroom are avoided by the spirits, to get a blessing from God, and to ensure they get blessings for their future family. This ceremony traditionally, will be done during midnight or during dawn. But now the flower bath is rarely done and it will now be done right after khatam quran. The materials needed for this ceremony are coconut, pandan, herbs, rice and betel leaf. Mak andam (indo botting), the one who responsible to this ceremony will bathe the bridegroom. The bride groom will be seated on banana leaves. Mak andam will start the bath process by pouring water from the head, right shoulder and left shoulder. Each part will be watered three times with specific recital or du'a. Then the bridegroom will be left to bath by themselves. After finishing the bath, the bridegroom then need to eat yellow glutinous rice with eggs.
- Smearing (mabeddak), is a process where the bride will be smeared by a powder that consists of rice, turmeric and few herbs. The rice will be soaked until soft and pounded together with other ingredients to get the powdery texture. The powder will be smeared to the bride's body.
- Then the bridegroom will do their henna. The henna leaves will be mixed with salt and a little bit of rice. The ingredients that used is different based on their district and which kind of Bugis they are. This is to show that the bridegroom are prepare for their married life. The bride and the groom will seat on a simple wedding altar that is prepared earlier. The family members will take turns to put the henna on the bridegroom's palms.
All the ceremony and the ingredients used have their own symbolics to shows how important every steps they take into the wedding.
