Destination 5 : The Wedding Day

 

During the wedding day, the groom will be paradedto bride's house for marriage ceremony (solemnization and sanding) The groom will be accompanied by his family and friends. Usually there would be 12 children to escort the groom while wearing Bugis traditional clothes. The kids will bring wedding gifts that has been decorated. 

After arriving at the bride's house, the groom will seat on 12 pieces of clothes which has been folded. This is to ask for blessings for both the groom and the bride on their future. Then the solemnization will be proceeded. Then the grrom will be brought to the brode's room for mappakarawa (ablution's rescind ceremony) . But before entering the room, the bride's party will ask for money as payment to enter the room (toll). It usually lasted for a long time due to a bargaining session. Mappakarawa will be guided by experienced person. This ceremony start when the person who has been appointed take the groom's thumb and bring it to touch a few selected parts of the bride's body. It usually will be at the chest, arms, nose or forehead. There are also probihited parts which is the anterior fontanelle that can means short lifespans. After this, the groom will put the ring on the bride's finger. 

Then the wedding will be continued with majlis bersanding where the bridegroom will sat on the pelamin accompanied by anak botting  (kids that will be representing the bridegroom/mini version). The bridegroom will seat all through the ceremony while the guests is eating or socializing. There will be 3-4 changing clothes time for the bridegroom throughout the ceremony. The guests will take turns to see the couple to give gifts. Most of the guest usually gave money in envelope because they think that the family would need money more than anything after holding a wedding as it take much money doing the process itself. 

After a few days, the newlywed couple will then go to the groom's house for another majlis bersanding. The purpose is to introduce and give chance to the bride to get to know the families and friends of her husband. The bride will be welcomed by the family members of the groom will sprinkled rice on her as a sign of purity. The bride will be introduced to the groom's family one by one. the bride will be given a gift in the form of bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry while the bride will reciprocate by giving a sarong.
